The Third Mainland Bridge, which has experienced partial closure to traffic, is scheduled to reopen for motorists within the next week.
David Umahi, the Minister of Works, made this announcement in Lagos while inspecting ongoing projects in the state alongside members of the Senate and House Committee on Works.
The Minister stated that the decision to reopen the bridge would provide relief for road users.
“In the next seven days the bridge will be opened to ease traffic. I have directed the contractors to open the second lane in my name in seven days’ time.
“Officially, President Bola Tinubu will be commissioning the rehabilitated road when he will be commissioning the coastal road,” Umahi said.
He clarified that the 11.8-kilometer dual lane project, managed by CCEC, was originally contracted at a cost of N21 billion, with 30 percent of the total cost already disbursed.
However, Umahi noted that there are additional expenses arising from factors such as the price of asphalt, which stands at N22,000 per square meter, as well as the installation of solar lights and CCTV systems, among others. He emphasized that the government is obligated to cover these additional costs as stipulated in the contract.
