Three die, eight injured in Ogun road crash

Three persons reportedly died and eight others injured when a speeding Toyota Corolla hit a taxi from the rear at Ile-Ise Panu axis at the Abeokuta end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

According to sources, both vehicles were on the way to Abeokuta when the accident occurred at 7.30am on Friday.

The impact of the accident mangled the Nissan Micra taxi marked AKM590YQ, while the engine compartment of the Toyota Corolla with number plate LND618FQ got damaged.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the incident.

Akinbiyi said an eyewitness account indicated that the driver of the Toyota Corolla lost control of the car due to speeding and rammed it into the taxi from the rear while passengers were trying to alight.

He added that at the time of the incident, there were 11 occupants in the two vehicles comprising four males and seven females.

He said, “According to an eyewitness account, both vehicles were inbound Abeokuta when the driver of the blue Corolla car, due to excessive speed, lost control while on motion and rammed into the Micra taxi from the back, while passengers in the taxi were alighting from it. As at the time of the crash, five passengers were in the taxi while six were in the Corolla.”

Akinbiyi said the corpses had been deposited at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, while the injured had been taken to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.

He said that while TRACE and the police commiserate with the family of the dead, warning motorists to avoid speeding.
