Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) have gathered at the Unity Fountain for a national protest.
While some protesters are already inside the Unity Fountain premises, security operatives have locked others out. After some agitation, the gate was opened, allowing the protesters to block the entrance with their trucks.
The protesters are demanding the payment of their four months’ withheld salaries and the renegotiation of the 2010 agreement with the Federal Government, among other issues.
Both unions, along with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), went on strike in 2022. SSANU and NASU’s strike lasted four months, while ASUU’s strike extended to eight months.
Although President Bola Tinubu directed that affected staff be paid four months’ salaries, SSANU and NASU members claim they have not received the wages, while ASUU members have been paid.
The unions have instructed their members to hold nationwide protests on July 9 across all state chapters, followed by a national protest in Abuja on Thursday.
