Security has been beefed up around the Kano State Government House following rumours surrounding Governor Abba Yusuf’s alleged plan to defect.
On Monday, joint security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were deployed to key points at the main entrance and other strategic areas.
Entry into the Government House was placed under heightened restriction, with visitors subjected to rigorous identification checks by security personnel.
Security screening was also intensified, as operatives enforced strict access control measures.
Rift With Kwankwaso
The security buildup comes amid rising speculation over an alleged fallout between Governor Yusuf and his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), is said to have openly opposed Yusuf’s reported intention to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such a move could destabilise the NNPP and weaken the Kwankwasiyya political movement.
Governor Yusuf, however, has dismissed claims of any disagreement.
Security operatives from the police and DSS were again seen positioned around the Kano State Government House on Monday as tension continued to mount.
The situation has reportedly extended into the NNPP, revealing strains in the long-standing political relationship between the two leaders.
Access to the Kano State Government House continued to be subjected to strict identification checks by operatives.
In a statement issued on behalf of the NNPP at both the Kano State and national levels, the party said it was fully aware of the political developments and does not endorse any defection to the APC.
“We are aware of the developments happening here in Kano State concerning some individuals who intend to defect to the APC.
“I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national party, and our national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with other leaders, do not approve of what is happening,” the NNPP Kano State Chairman, Hashim Dungurawa, said.
Access to the Kano State Government House remained under strict control, with security operatives enforcing identification procedures.
Kano’s Electoral Significance
Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states due to its large voter population.
The state consistently ranks among those with the highest number of registered voters, making it a key battleground during presidential elections.
Historically, Kano has delivered millions of votes, often playing a decisive role in shaping national electoral outcomes.
Any change in political alignment by the sitting governor — particularly involving Kwankwaso, who enjoys strong grassroots support — could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
