The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that its newly appointed registrar, Segun Aina, played a significant role in the early adoption of the computer-based test (CBT) system.

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu named Aina, a professor of computer engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as the incoming registrar. He is set to replace Is-haq Oloyede, whose second term ends on 31 July 2026.

Oloyede originally assumed office as JAMB registrar on 9 August 2016 under former President Muhammadu Buhari and was reappointed for another term in August 2021.

In a statement, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, noted that the 39-year-old academic, who will turn 40 in July, is set to become the youngest registrar in the board’s history.

Onanuga described Aina as “a distinguished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reform”.

He added that Aina earned a bachelor’s degree in computer systems engineering from the University of Kent, followed by a master’s in internet computing and network security, and a PhD in digital signal processing, both obtained from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.

Reacting to the appointment, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, said the computer engineering expert, who has extensive experience in data-driven institutional processes, will officially take over on 1 August 2026.

According to him, “He was actively involved in the early stages of the introduction of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) system in the Board,”

Benjamin further stated that “Prof. Aina is not new to the operational ecosystem of the Board, having played a key role during the formative stage of the CBT regime, which has transformed the conduct of examinations in Nigeria.”

He also added that JAMB has consistently benefited from registrars with “world-class experience” whose leadership has strengthened the institution over time.

The board’s management and staff congratulated Aina and expressed readiness to welcome him when he assumes office.
