President Bola Tinubu has approved the reintroduction of History as a mandatory subject for primary and secondary school students, starting in 2025.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made the announcement on Channels Television’s 2024 Year-End Review on December 31, 2024.
History was removed from Nigeria’s basic school curriculum in 2007, a move that has faced criticism over the years.
The education minister remarked, “Let me address basic education—the curriculum is good. However, one important subject that has been missing is Nigerian history. We now have people up to the age of 30 disconnected from our history, which is unheard of in other parts of the world.”
“President Bola Tinubu has mandated that we reinstate it in the curriculum, and it will be back. From 2025, our students in primary schools, JSS, and secondary schools will study it as part of their education.”
