President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law two bills establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu stated that these specialised universities would help meet educational needs, drive research and innovation, and contribute to national economic growth. He added that they would serve as training hubs for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria now has 63 federal universities, alongside 63 state and 149 private universities.
On 3rd February 2025, Tinubu also approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State, and authorised the takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, converting it into a federal institution.
