The House of Representatives has approved a further extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget, moving the deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
The decision was taken during Tuesday’s plenary after the Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, moved a motion seeking the extension.
Ihonvbere said the capital budget had not been fully implemented because of economic challenges.
Lawmakers subsequently accelerated consideration of the bill, taking it through first, second and third readings during the sitting.
This marks the fourth extension of the deadline for implementing the capital component of the 2025 budget.
The National Assembly first extended the deadline in December 2025, moving it from December 31, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
On March 31, lawmakers extended the deadline again to June 30, before approving another extension on June 15, moving it to September 30.
At the time of the June extension, lawmakers said the execution of capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act had not reached the desired level, giving government agencies additional time to complete ongoing projects and utilise approved funds.
