President Bola Tinubu on Thursday commended the ingenuity and resilience of Nigerians during an exhibition of contemporary Nigerian art in London.

Tinubu made the remarks at a reception held at the Tate Modern as part of events commemorating his state visit to the United Kingdom.

According to a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said the exhibition showcased how Nigerians have continued to reshape and express their identity through art.

“The theme of the exhibition, Nigeria’s modernism, is more than just a title for an art show. It is a testament to revolution. It tells the story of a generation of Nigerian giants, who in the middle of the 20th century refused to be despised but chose to define themselves,” the President said.

He also stated that Nigerian artists have produced lasting works by combining traditional elements with modern influences.

The President further expressed confidence in Nigeria’s economy, saying the country had overcome economic difficulties and was moving toward growth.

He encouraged Nigerians to stay hopeful and not allow negative narratives to weaken their confidence.

The United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy, who hosted the reception, emphasised the close relationship between both countries, noting that trade between Nigeria and the UK had risen to £8.1bn.

Lammy also acknowledged the impact of Nigerians in the UK, especially in the cultural and economic spheres.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the accomplishments of Nigerians living abroad.

Those present at the event included Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and several officials of the federal government.
