President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kassim Shettima met with governors from the 36 states and ministers on Thursday to discuss a new minimum wage for workers and other economic issues.

The meeting took place during the 141st session of the National Economic Council (NEC) in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Before the President’s arrival, the Vice President chaired the meeting, which included state governors, deputy governors, and ministers.

This meeting occurred two days after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) deferred a minimum wage review memo for further consultations.

On Wednesday, governors from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) met in Abuja, promising that ongoing negotiations among the government, private sector, and organized labor would result in better wages.

In his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, the President assured Organized Labour that an executive bill for the new national minimum wage would soon be sent to the National Assembly.

The President is expected to decide on the government’s and private sector’s ₦62,000 proposal and Labour’s ₦250,000 demand.
