President Bola Tinubu has once again paid tribute to the late banking tycoon Herbert Wigwe, marking one year since his passing. Tinubu described Wigwe as “a star” whose loss was deeply felt in Nigeria.
The banker, his wife Chizoba, their son Chizi, and former President of the National Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Abimbola Ogunbanjo, tragically lost their lives in an air crash in the United States exactly one year ago.
Speaking at a remembrance service held in Lagos on Sunday, Tinubu, represented by Finance Minister Wale Edun, praised Wigwe for his contributions to the nation.
“Wigwe was more than a banker. He was a builder – of institutions, dreams, and people,” he said at the solemn gathering at Eko Hotel.
The President highlighted Wigwe’s immense impact on youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and philanthropy.
“But even in our grief, we find solace in the enduring legacy of his work, his values, and the institutions he built. His story reminds us that vision, hard work, and service to humanity define true greatness,” Tinubu added.
He also extended his condolences to Wigwe’s family, Access Holdings, and the loved ones the former banker left behind.
“Nigeria has lost a shining star,” he said. “But the light Wigwe kindled in our nation will never fade.”
‘A Larger-than-Life Presence’
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also paid tribute to Wigwe, recalling the banker’s larger-than-life influence.
“A year ago, the world as we knew it changed forever. In an instant, we lost a man whose presence was larger than life,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Wigwe played a key role in Lagos State’s development, travelling globally to secure partnerships and funding.
“His absence has been deeply felt over the past year. There are projects that would undoubtedly have progressed faster had he been here. Herbert would have ensured they moved forward,” he added.
