President Bola Tinubu on Monday in Abuja signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State, pledging greater support for the community.

According to a statement from the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the university will be located in Tai, Ogoni.

During the signing ceremony at the State House, President Tinubu emphasised that the university’s creation would empower Ogoni citizens and enhance development opportunities.

Commitment to Environmental Justice

“Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development,” Tinubu stated.

He acknowledged the long-standing environmental struggles of the Ogoni people and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to their well-being and that of the Niger Delta region.

“This is more than just the establishment of a university. It is a reaffirmation of our unwavering commitment to the Ogoni people and the nation as a whole,” he said.

“For decades, the Ogoni have led the fight for environmental restoration and sustainability, shaping both national and global discussions on these critical issues.”

By signing the bill into law, the President said his government was addressing historical grievances while creating new opportunities for learning and progress.

A Centre for Sustainable Development

The university is expected to serve as a centre of excellence, equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges, develop clean energy solutions, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

Tinubu expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, especially the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives, for their support in passing the bill.

He also commended the Ogoni delegation for their persistent advocacy, assuring them that their efforts would be rewarded.

“As we move forward, I encourage all stakeholders—traditional institutions, the academic community, private sector partners, and young people—to embrace this university as a symbol of knowledge, unity, and progress,” he urged.

Support from Key Officials

Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa stated that the university would prioritise interdisciplinary studies in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology to help address regional and national ecological challenges.

National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu also highlighted that the institution’s establishment was a step towards addressing long-standing concerns about restoring Ogoniland.

Senator Mpigi Barinada, leader of the Ogoni delegation, thanked President Tinubu for signing the bill and acknowledged the contributions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and NSA Ribadu in facilitating its passage.

Barinada said the university would be a beacon of hope for the Ogoni community, encouraging peace and development.
