Following concerns from prominent members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Tinubu has decided to withdraw Ruby Onwudiwe’s nomination for a seat on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) board.

The complaints were made in response to Onwudiwe’s support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential race, according to WesternPost.

Senators Opeyemi Bamidele and Solomon Adeola raised reservations about Onwudiwe’s nomination during a meeting with President Tinubu and Senate President Akpabio.

In addition, some important APC supporters strongly opposed the nomination of an opposition politician to a critical position at the federal bank.

In response to comments and complaints, President Tinubu is set to name a fresh nominee from the South East to replace Onwudiwe.

The decision underscores the importance of resolving party members’ concerns while also assuring congruence with the party’s objectives and beliefs.

President Bola Tinubu previously asked the Nigerian Senate to appoint Dr. Ruby Onwudiwe as a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) board of directors.

Tinubu emphasised the importance of Onwudiwe’s appointment in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpiabio and presented during Wednesday’s session in Abuja, citing clauses of the CBN Establishment Act 2007.

“I am pleased to nominate Dr Ruby Onwudiwe for confirmation by the senate as a member of the CBN board of directors,” he said.
“It is noteworthy that Onwudiwe is being proposed as a replacement for Mr. Kalu Eke, who is unavailable for the position.”
Tinubu first encouraged the Senate to immediately evaluate and confirm Onwudiwe’s appointment, emphasising her qualifications and appropriateness for the position.
