Total darkness looms as National Grid collapses again

In yet another blow to Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, the national grid failed on Thursday, throwing the country into darkness once more. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company informed its clients of the unpleasant news via various social media sites.

According to sources, the grid breakdown occurred about 4:28 p.m., leaving large areas without power. The Abuja DisCo published a statement telling customers that the outage was caused by a system breakdown on the national grid.

“Dear valued customers, please be informed that the current power outage is due to a system failure from the national grid. The system collapsed at about 16:28 hours today, March 28, 2024, causing the outage currently being experienced across our franchise area. We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply,” the statement read.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company echoed similar sentiments, alerting its customers to the situation. “Dear valued customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 16:28 hours which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us,” the company stated.

This latest incident marks the fourth national grid collapse this year, underscoring the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector. As efforts to restore power continue, citizens brace themselves for further disruptions and uncertainties in the already strained electricity supply system.
