Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-match ban and a £100,000 fine following an independent regulatory commission’s ruling over his alleged racist remarks about teammate Son Heung-min.
Reports, including from Football London, revealed that Bentancur was charged by the Football Association (FA) after making the comments during a pre-season interview.
The FA’s decision means Bentancur will miss domestic fixtures, dealing a significant blow to Tottenham’s campaign.
Under manager Ange Postecoglou, the Uruguayan midfielder has been a key figure, contributing consistently to Spurs’ strong Premier League performances.
Apart from a concussion ruling him out of one match, Bentancur has been an integral part of the squad. His suspension now leaves a critical gap for Postecoglou to address in the coming weeks.
The FA’s statement on Monday said, “An independent regulatory commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.
“It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 by acting improperly, using abusive and/or insulting words, and bringing the game into disrepute.”
