Traffic congestion as truck crashes on Onitsha-Owerri road

On Friday, a downpour made the normal traffic on the Onitsha-Owerri expressway in Anambra State worse. It had started to rain on Wednesday.

As a result, a truck carrying cargo that was leaving Onitsha fell on the busy Upper Iweka intersection of the road, next to Aba Park. The incident reportedly took place late on Thursday.

No one was hurt, though, since witnesses at the site claim that when they noticed the truck driver straining to get through, they promptly took safety measures.

For both drivers and pedestrians, the continual spilling of container-carrying trucks on the heavily used road has been a source of concern. Every time a truck or lorry approaches, road users may be seen running for cover.

This comes right after Nze Unekwe, the state chairman of the Tipper Drivers Association of Nigeria, bemoaned the numerous lives lost as a result of trucks falling off the road on a regular basis.

However, due to people being observed walking to their various destinations, there is now traffic on both lanes of the road, especially from Upper Iweka to Enamel and to the Amanator area.

Road users bemoan the road’s near-impossibility to utilize it and plead with the federal and state governments of Anambra to intervene to save them.

A road user said, “We are suffering so much on this road. Onitsha has big buildings, four-storey buildings here and there, but no road. This is not good for a commercial city.”
