TRENDING: Ghanaian trolls mock Nigeria with parody World Cup squad list, feature “ASUU as main striker, Obi as captain”
Social media has been flooded with jokes and banter as Ghanaians and Nigerians engaged in online trolling following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The banter began after Fabrizio Romano, an Italian journalist, shared Ghana’s Black Stars’ final squad list ahead of the tournament co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.
In the comment section of the post on X, Accra Mayor, a Ghanaian user, posted a parody list of what he described as Nigeria’s “World Cup squad.”
The list featured Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as captain, alongside Nigerian entertainers such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Asake and Sabinus.
The satirical lineup also included representations of national challenges, with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) named as the “main striker”, referencing the union’s long history of industrial actions over unmet agreements with the federal government. Other entries on the list included “No 24hr electricty”, “Dollar Price” and “Sapa”, a Nigerian slang term meaning poverty.
The post sparked widespread reactions, with Ghanaians embracing the humour while Nigerians responded with counter-banter.
The Super Eagles missed out on the World Cup after losing on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in the African playoffs final in late 2025.
Nigeria had also failed to qualify for the 2022 edition after Ghana secured the ticket on away goals.
