Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have attacked a commercial bus belonging to GUO Transport along the Ore–Benin expressway, killing the driver and abducting several passengers, in an incident that highlights growing insecurity on major highways.

Reports indicate that the attackers ambushed the east-bound vehicle, opened fire on the driver who died at the scene, and then took the passengers to an unknown location.

The attack is believed to have occurred along a notorious section of the highway linking the South-West to the South-South, an area long associated with banditry and abductions.

Although official confirmation from security agencies is still expected, local sources and a circulating video suggest that the passengers were forced into nearby forests, a method often used by kidnapping groups operating in the area. Similar incidents in the past have involved mass abductions, with victims later released after ransom payments.

The Ore–Benin expressway has increasingly become a hotspot for such criminal activities, with security analysts linking the trend to poor patrol coverage, challenging terrain, and the route’s importance for interregional travel.

The latest attack has further heightened public concern, with many Nigerians calling for stronger security presence, improved surveillance, and coordinated response measures to address the persistent threat.
