The convoy of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, came under attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists while travelling along the Kareto–Damasak Road in northern Borno.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon as Gubio and members of his entourage were returning from Damasak, where they had gone as part of an appreciation tour of communities in the area.
According to security sources, the attackers planted an improvised explosive device on the highway before attempting to ambush the convoy.
A police armoured vehicle reportedly triggered the explosive, causing a loud blast and damaging the vehicle. The explosion was followed by gunfire as the attackers attempted to engage the convoy.
Security personnel attached to the convoy responded immediately, taking defensive positions and exchanging fire with the terrorists.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the attack, saying that no member of the entourage was killed.
Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said the attackers were repelled by combined security forces and may have fled into the surrounding bush after one of them was reportedly injured.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, also confirmed that tactical police operatives countered the attackers after they used an IED and rocket-propelled grenades against the convoy.
He said the security team pushed the terrorists back into the bush before scanning and clearing the area to prevent a secondary attack.
Despite the incident, Gubio and members of his entourage continued their journey after the route was secured.
The Kareto–Damasak corridor remains one of the security-sensitive routes in northern Borno, where terrorist groups have continued to carry out attacks and use roadside explosives.
The incident has generated attention online after a video emerged showing the moment the explosion and gunshots were heard during the attack.
The incident has renewed concerns over security along major roads in northern Borno, particularly as political activities gather momentum in the state.
Authorities are expected to intensify security operations along the route and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks, while investigations continue into the incident.
No deaths were reported among the candidate’s convoy, but the attack highlights the persistent security challenges facing residents and travellers in the region.
