The management of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, has decided to raise the fees for undergraduate students in the institution.
This is according to a statement issued on July 20, 2023, by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, UNILAG branch.
During a meeting with the top management staff, the Vice-Chancellor reportedly announced the fee increment.
Previously, students paid N19,000, but the new fees have been set at N190,250 for medicine students, and N140,250 for courses involving laboratory and studio requirements.
As stated by SSANU, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, held a meeting with representatives from the three non-academic staff unions on Thursday, July 20th, to address matters relating to the welfare of the union members.
“During the meeting, the proposed fees for undergraduate students of UNILAG were disclosed.
“Students without lab and studio use will pay N100,750, those with lab use will pay N140,250 and the college of medicine would pay N190,250,” the statement said.
During the meeting, Rasaki Yusuf, a representative from SSANU, requested a rebate for university staff members with children studying at the institution.
However, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, asserted that the new charges had been set at a national level and could not be altered for specific student categories.
Instead, Prof. Ogunsola offered an alternative option for staff members, allowing them to pay the increased fees in instalments. Nevertheless, she emphasized that the full payment should be made one month before the final exam
Efforts to obtain a comment from the University of Lagos’ Public Relations Officer, Alagba Ibraheem, were unsuccessful.
