A fully-loaded truck with registration number GGE 624 YJ fell off the Pen Cinema Bridge in Lagos State on Saturday, leaving the driver with serious injuries.

When NewsClick Nigeria team visited the scene of the accident on Saturday, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) had cordoned off the area and commenced rescue operations.

Different eyewitness accounts said the truck fell on empty commercial vehicles parked under the bridge and were condemned to ruins after the fall.

According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident happened earlier in the day along Agege, Old Abeokuta Road, near the bridge.

He explained that initial investigations revealed the driver, who sustained grievous fractures to both hands, lost control while navigating the bridge. The truck subsequently plunged off the bridge, landing on two commercial buses parked below.

LASTMA officers promptly rescued the injured driver, handing him over to officers from the Elere Police Division. He was later rushed to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent treatment.

“In a bid to safeguard other road users and forestall secondary incidents, LASTMA personnel swiftly secured the accident site by cordoning off the area and diverting vehicular traffic. Thereafter, operatives of the LASEMA Response Unit expeditiously cleared the wreckage, thereby restoring unimpeded traffic flow along the axis,” the statement added.

Expressing concern, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged motorists, especially truck drivers, to exercise greater caution, particularly with the arrival of the rainy season.

He stressed the importance of complying with road safety protocols and encouraged drivers to use the newly installed speed-limiting devices, describing it as a crucial step towards reducing accidents and enhancing road safety.

Bakare-Oki also extended heartfelt wishes for the rapid and full recovery of the injured driver.
