The Trump administration has withdrawn former vice president Kamala Harris’s Secret Service protection, a White House official confirmed on Friday.

The administration ended an extension previously approved by then-president Joe Biden. Harris, the defeated Democratic presidential candidate, saw her customary six-month protection as ex-VP expire on 21 July, CNN reported.

A senior aide told AFP that Harris was “grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

Although Harris has kept a relatively low profile since losing the election, she is scheduled to tour this autumn to promote her memoir, 107 Days, which recounts her failed presidential bid against Trump. The book, published by Simon & Schuster, will be released in the United States on 23 September.

Harris, the first woman to serve as US vice president, became the Democratic nominee after Biden withdrew from the race over concerns about his cognitive health. She said she wrote the book with “candour and reflection,” promising a candid behind-the-scenes account of her short campaign.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has taken a series of steps against political opponents and critics. He has stripped former officials of security clearances, cut federal funding to universities, and targeted law firms that pursued cases against him.

Just last week, FBI agents raided the home and office of former national security adviser John Bolton, one of Trump’s fiercest critics, in an investigation linked to classified documents, officials said.
