US President Donald Trump on Tuesday honoured slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, describing him as a “martyr for truth and freedom.”

During the sombre White House ceremony, Trump, 79, presented the medal to Kirk’s widow, Erika, and compared the 31-year-old to historical figures such as Socrates, Saint Peter, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr.

The president vowed to intensify his clampdown on what he termed “radical left-wing violence” following Kirk’s assassination. “In the wake of Charlie’s assassination, our country must have absolutely no tolerance for this radical left violence, extremism, and terror,” Trump told a gathering of conservative figures. “We’re done with the angry mobs, and we’re not going to let our cities be unsafe.”

The US State Department announced it had revoked visas of at least six foreign nationals who had “celebrated” the killing online, citing offensive posts from individuals in Argentina, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, and Germany.

Kirk, a father of two and founder of the conservative youth movement Turning Point USA, was shot dead on a Utah college campus last month, prompting widespread grief among conservatives. His death led Trump to deploy National Guard troops to several Democrat-run cities.

At the ceremony—attended by Argentinian President Javier Milei and prominent right-wing media personalities—Erika Kirk thanked Trump for returning from a Middle East peace trip to present the honour on what would have been her late husband’s 32nd birthday.

“You have given him the best birthday gift he could ever have,” she said tearfully, adding that her husband “would probably have run for president” had he lived.

Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged with Kirk’s murder and faces the death penalty if convicted.
