Trump imposes sanctions on Colombia over deportation row
US President Donald Trump on Sunday imposed sweeping tariffs and sanctions against Colombia in retaliation for its refusal to accept deportation flights, intensifying his immigration crackdown and challenging resistance across Latin America.
Trump, back in office for less than a week, announced 25% tariffs on Colombian products, rising to 50% within a week. However, Colombia benefits from a free-trade agreement with the US, raising questions about Trump’s authority to act.
He also revoked visas for Colombian officials and allies of President Gustavo Petro, and imposed stricter airport checks for Colombians.
“These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing leader, resisted, banning US planes carrying deported migrants and offering his presidential plane to return them “with dignity.” He urged undocumented Americans in Colombia to regularise their status but ruled out raids to deport them.
Trump’s actions have strained ties across Latin America, with Brazil condemning the treatment of deported citizens, including reports of handcuffed migrants denied basic needs during flights.
Latin American countries have vowed to welcome returnees with support schemes, highlighting the deepening divide over Trump’s immigration policies.
