President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will posthumously award murdered right-wing activist Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honour.

Speaking at a Pentagon ceremony marking the 11 September 2001 attacks, Trump said: “I’m pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

Kirk, 31, a leading figure on the Republican right credited with helping Trump return to the presidency last year, was shot dead while addressing a large audience at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
