The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has warned of a potential strike if the Federal Government does not reverse its recent approval of a 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs.
TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, made this known during an interview on Politics Today on Thursday.
Following a National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting, the union condemned the tariff hike as ill-timed and an act of economic oppression against Nigerians.
When asked if the TUC would take industrial action, Osifo responded, “Yes! Correct!” He added that a final decision on strike action would be made after further consultations within the union.
Osifo urged the government to address the root cause of economic instability, particularly foreign exchange mismanagement, rather than imposing tariff increases.
He acknowledged the financial struggles of telecom companies but argued that economic stability should be prioritised to reduce operating costs rather than resorting to constant price hikes.
Labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have also opposed the tariff increase, prompting discussions with the government. A 10-member committee has been set up to review the situation and submit its report within two weeks.
