Two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have lost their lives in a swimming pool accident following their matriculation ceremony.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh identifying the victims as 22-year-old Oludere Opeyemi and 19-year-old Adegbola Blessing.

The students reportedly died at a hotel in Akungba-Akoko where a party had been organised to celebrate the matriculation of newly admitted students.

Jimoh said the incident was officially reported on January 29, 2026. He explained that the first victim was found unconscious in the hotel’s swimming pool later in the evening.

“He was rescued by the pool manager and administered first aid before he regained consciousness and was able to stand. He was later taken home by his friends,” he said.

However, shortly afterward, the second victim was discovered in the same pool.

“He was immediately rescued and taken to the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Jimoh added.

The police spokesperson said officers from the Akungba Divisional Police Station were promptly deployed to the hotel to begin an investigation. As part of initial inquiries, the hotel manager, Ayomide Badejo, and the pool manager were invited for questioning.

According to him, the situation worsened in the early hours of January 30, 2026, when Blessing, who had earlier been revived, was reported dead.

Jimoh stated that the case has since been transferred to the command’s monitoring unit for a thorough and discreet investigation. He added that the bodies of the deceased students have been deposited at the State Hospital morgue in Ikare-Akoko for preservation and autopsy, while investigations continue to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
