Two dead as bus bursts into flames in Ogun

Two people died in the early hours of Thursday following a fatal collision involving a truck and a commercial bus at Ogbere Junction along the Ogbere–J4 corridor in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed that the accident occurred at about 5:10 a.m.

According to the Command, the crash involved a white Mack truck bearing registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus without a visible registration number.

The FRSC said four adult male occupants were involved in the incident. Two of them died at the scene, while the remaining two escaped unhurt.

The Corps blamed the crash on route violation and excessive speeding, explaining that the force of the impact caused the Peugeot J5 bus to catch fire, completely burning its front section.

“The probable causes of the crash were route violation (RTV) and speed violation (SPV). The impact of the collision led to the Peugeot J5 bus catching fire, with its front section completely burnt,” the statement said.

The Command also disclosed that its rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes after receiving the distress call and immediately began traffic control to ease congestion.

“FRSC rescue personnel arrived at the scene within two minutes of being notified and immediately commenced traffic management. The affected lane was diverted to the alternative carriageway while efforts continued to remove the wreckage and restore free flow of traffic,” the statement added.

The bodies of the deceased were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and taken to a mortuary.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the victims and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations.

“Drivers must avoid speeding and route violations, especially during periods of poor visibility and on wet road surfaces. These dangerous driving behaviours remain major causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads,” Ogunjobi said.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to reducing road crashes through continuous enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and prompt emergency response.

The Command also advised motorists to adhere to speed limits, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and drive responsibly at all times.
