Two thieves were electrocuted while attempting to steal solar streetlights in the Ogobiri community, Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
A community source confirmed that their bodies were found on Saturday morning near the new site of the state-owned Niger Delta University and Ogobiri roundabout.
The thieves had already loosened four solar poles and were attempting to loosen a fifth when it fell onto high-tension wires. With power still running, both men were electrocuted.
“One of them was severely burnt and died instantly, while the other was burnt beyond recognition,” the source said.
The remains of one thief were taken to the mortuary, and the streetlight poles remained at the scene.
Stealing streetlights has been a frequent issue in the area. Bayelsa Police spokesman ASP Musa Muhammad confirmed he had not received a report on the incident.
