A Nigerian national, Obinwa Obichukwu, has been jailed for two years in the United Kingdom after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman at London’s Euston railway station.
The British Transport Police said the 45-year-old was sentenced by the Inner London Crown Court on July 21 after he was found guilty of two sexual assault charges earlier this year. The court also issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed him on the UK’s sex offenders register for the same period.
Investigators said the attack occurred on August 20, 2023, when Obichukwu approached the victim near Euston station and began talking to her. He allegedly tried to persuade her to go home with him before repeatedly grabbing her hand as she attempted to walk away.
Police said the woman was assaulted near the station entrance after Obichukwu blocked her path. He then allegedly followed her into the London Underground and sexually assaulted her again close to the ticket barriers.
The victim later managed to break free and reported the incident to the authorities.
Officers subsequently identified and arrested Obichukwu at his Hertfordshire home. According to police, CCTV footage and the victim’s account formed key evidence that led to his prosecution.
Detective Constable Daniel Burke described the convict as “a sexual predator” who deliberately preyed on a woman travelling alone.
“Obinwa Obichukwu is a sexual predator who targeted a lone woman and attacked her at a busy London station.
“He claimed his assault was consensual and took his case to trial, but fortunately the jury saw straight through his lies and he’s now behind bars where he belongs.
“Tackling violence and intimidation against women and girls is a priority for us as a force and we’re tireless in our efforts to bring offenders like Obichukwu to justice.
