UK to shorten post-study work period for foreign students to 18 months from 2027

Beginning January 1, 2027, foreign students in the United Kingdom will have only 18 months to secure employment after graduation, a reduction from the current two-year allowance.

The adjustment is part of major reforms to the UK’s immigration policy, outlined in a white paper published in May. The proposed timeline was presented to Parliament last week.

According to the Home Office, the new policy aims to ensure that international graduates make meaningful contributions to the UK economy.

“It comes after data clearly showed that many holders had not transitioned into graduate-level employment as intended,” the Home Office said in a statement on October 14.

As part of the reforms, financial requirements for student visas will also increase for the 2025–2026 academic year. Applicants will be required to prove they have “sufficient funds” to support themselves, although the exact amount was not disclosed.

Currently, international students studying in London must demonstrate access to £1,483 per month for up to nine months, while those studying outside London need £1,136 per month for the same period.

The Home Office further announced a 32 percent increase in the immigration skills charge (ISC), a fee employers pay when sponsoring skilled foreign workers. The department explained that the additional revenue will support investment in the UK workforce and reduce dependence on overseas labor.

“The Parliamentary process to increase the charge will begin later this week,” the statement added.

English Language Requirements and Skilled Worker Expansion

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stressed that migrants settling in the UK must demonstrate proficiency in English.

“If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part,” Mahmood said.

Under the revised rules, migrants will be required to attain an A-level equivalent in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The language test will be administered by a Home Office-approved provider, and results will be verified as part of the visa application process.

Additionally, the Home Office announced plans to double the number of highly skilled migrants entering the UK under specialized visa routes. This expansion will target “the best researchers, designers, and creatives working in film and TV to ensure continued competitiveness in growth sectors.”

The department added that further modifications, including updates to the global talent route, will take effect in 2026.
