French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Saturday that Ukraine is willing to agree to an unconditional ceasefire, stressing that it is now Russia’s turn to take steps towards ending the war.

Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome, Macron described their conversation on X as “very positive,” reaffirming that both leaders are united in their pursuit of ending the conflict.

“Ending the war in Ukraine — that is the goal we share with President Trump,” Macron said.

The French President confirmed that Ukraine is prepared to halt hostilities unconditionally and is committed to working with both European and American partners to achieve peace.

“President Zelenskyy reiterated this to me today,” Macron added.

“Now, it is up to President Putin to demonstrate that he truly seeks peace.”

Macron also reiterated France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine through the Coalition of the Willing — a diplomatic initiative launched in Paris earlier this year to coordinate international efforts towards a ceasefire and a lasting resolution.

“We shall continue our efforts within the Coalition of the Willing, initiated in Paris last March, to secure both an immediate ceasefire and a durable, lasting peace in Ukraine,” he said.

Zelenskyy was in Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican. During his visit, he also held discussions with United States President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Zelenskyy described his meeting with Trump as “very symbolic.”
