Several University of Benin (UNIBEN) students were trapped in a three-storey building that collapsed in Ekosodin on Saturday morning.

Ekosodin, located near the University of Benin, is home to many students.

The building on Ekhator Street, Benin City, collapsed during heavy rainfall.

Reports indicate that while some of the trapped students have been rescued, efforts are still underway to locate others.

The Dean of Student Affairs is reportedly at the site, coordinating the rescue alongside the university’s team.

A student present at the scene told Channels Television that the university rescue team successfully evacuated some occupants, many of whom were seriously injured and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The rescue team is still searching for one of the victims who remains trapped inside the rubble, called from inside and the rescue team has continued its search to locate and rescue her and others who are still trapped,” the student said.

At the time of reporting, the university management has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of individuals affected by the incident.
