A 200-level male student at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, has reportedly taken his own life due to economic hardship.

The deceased, whose identity remains unconfirmed, was a student in the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS) and had a cumulative grade point average of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication.

The incident occurred at his private residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin, the state capital.

Sources within the university suggested that financial struggles led to his decision, with reports indicating he lost his father a few years ago. His mother, a retired teacher, had since shouldered the burden of his education.

The deceased reportedly faced severe financial difficulties upon resuming school last year, prompting his colleagues to raise funds for his tuition and basic needs.

However, last weekend, he allegedly consumed a poisonous substance after his roommate had left for lectures, leaving behind a note explaining his financial distress.

His roommate discovered the tragedy upon returning and raised the alarm.

A senior administrative officer at the university, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident, describing it as shocking and stating that it had left the institution and students in mourning.
