Update: NIWA rescues 15 passengers, 1 dies, 1 missing in Lagos boat mishap

The National Inland Waterways Authority’s (NIWA) Lagos Area Office announced on Thursday that 15 passengers were rescued following a boat accident near the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge. The accident included a 17-passenger boat.
The Authority announced that one passenger is still missing, and one has been declared dead, as the hunt for the missing individual continues.

According to an official statement from NIWA made available to the Daily Sun, the 17-passenger boat T-BEN collided with an unidentified object in the canal at 6:50pm on Wednesday, putting it in a dangerous scenario.

According to NIWA, in response to the emergency, the captain skillfully guided the vessel to the shore to ensure the passengers’ safety and promptly informed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Search and Rescue Team, which, along with other relevant agencies, quickly initiated rescue operations.
According to NIWA, 15 passengers have been safely evacuated from the stricken boat, with one still missing and one confirmed killed.

“Search and rescue activities are ongoing to find the missing person. It further added that officials are actively participating in the effort, and that additional details would be released as the rescue operations progresses.
