US, NATO have reached Greenland deal framework – Trump

US President Donald Trump says he and Mark Rutte, NATO secretary-general, have “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland”.

Trump disclosed this in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, noting that the understanding followed a “very productive meeting”.

“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations,” the US president said.

Although he did not outline the details of the framework, Trump said the talks prompted him to drop plans to impose tariffs on European allied countries that were scheduled to take effect on February 1.

“Further information will be made available as discussions progress,” he added.

The development represents a significant shift after weeks of controversy surrounding Trump’s repeated push to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark, which is also a NATO member.

Denmark and Greenland have consistently maintained that the island is not for sale.

As tensions rose, some European NATO countries reportedly boosted their military presence in the territory.

The framework agreement also followed a private exchange Trump shared a day earlier, in which Rutte said he was “committed to finding a way forward on Greenland”.

“Can’t wait to see you,” Rutte added.

Trump has ruled out using military force to take over Greenland but has maintained that negotiations remain an option.

Earlier, he described Denmark as “ungrateful” for declining to hand over the island.
