Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma on Wednesday defended subsidy removal, saying all presidential candidates promised to end the policy during their campaigns.

Uzodimma, also said that governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform endorsed the decision to remove subsidy.

The governor, who spoke shortly after meeting with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC in Abuja, wondered why there should be hues and cry over the decision by the Tinubu government.

Recalling that former   President Muhammadu Buhari had repeatedly said that fuel subsidy was no longer sustainable, he assured that Tinubu would ensure that the interest of common Nigerians was protected.

Uzodimma, who is the new  Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF), said: “All the presidential candidates during their campaigns promised that they will remove fuel subsidy.

“The immediate past government before it left, made us know that fuel subsidy is no longer sustainable. What we are talking about now is the implementation process. How to implement the programme in a manner that will not be too hard on the people. And I think the government is working on it.

“I have confidence in the ability of the current President to navigate through the waters and take decisions that will be in the best interest of our people and the country as a nation.”

On zoning of the presiding officers’ positions of the 10th National Assembly, the PGF chairman said that the APC leaders  have    continued to convince and talk to stakeholders and collectively all  issues will be resolved.”
