Veteran journalist, respected public relations expert and former Chief Press Secretary to several Oyo State governors, Oloye Lekan Alabi, has passed away.
Alabi, who was also the Abese of Ibadanland, reportedly died on Saturday morning in Lagos at the age of 76, according to a statement from the Olubadan Palace.
The statement, signed by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko, confirmed the death of the media icon and noted that his burial would take place on Sunday in line with Islamic rites.
“The veteran journalist and multiple Press Secretary to former Oyo State governors, Lekan Alabi, is dead. The Abese Olubadan passed away this morning in Lagos at the age of 76 years,” the statement read.
It added, “Family sources say he would be buried tomorrow in accordance with Islamic rites.”
Alabi was widely recognised as one of Oyo State’s most influential journalists and communication professionals, with a career marked by excellence, professionalism and commitment to public service.
He served as Chief Press Secretary to successive Oyo State governors, where he built a reputation as a skilled communicator and trusted media adviser.
Beyond his contributions to journalism and public relations, the late Alabi was also known as a historian, author and cultural advocate who played a significant role in documenting and promoting the heritage of Ibadanland and the Yoruba people.
His death has sparked tributes from political figures, media practitioners, traditional institutions and associates across Nigeria, who have praised his impact on journalism, governance communication and cultural preservation.
The family is expected to release additional details about his funeral arrangements following his burial, which will be conducted according to Islamic customs.
