VIDEO: Lagos Govt uncovers another under-bridge ‘apartment’ in Ikoyi, evicts ‘tenants’

The Lagos State Government has announced discovery of another under-bridge apartments in the highbrow Ikoyi axis of the state.

According to the Government, the illegal apartment was found beneath Osborne Bridge.

NewsClick Nigeria reports that earlier in the week, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment uncovered 86 apartments under the Dolphin Estate Bridge, Ikoyi, where tenants pay N250,000 yearly rent.

But days later, the ministry said another illegal settlement had been discovered in same Ikoyi area of the state.

“Another illegal settlement was discovered under the Osborne Bridge, Ikoyi. Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps @LAGESCOfficial (KAI) commenced immediate clearance operation,” the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, posted on his X handle Thursday alongside a video of the illegal apartment.

He, however, did not give further details about the illegal settlement unlike the Dolphin Estate Bridge occupants who were said to be inhabiting 86 partitioned rooms, sized “10×10 and 12×10”.

“18 individuals squatting illegally under the bridge leading from Dolphin Estate were arrested yesterday 30th of April, 2024 by the officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps,” the commissioner wrote.

“A total number of 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for different illegal activities were discovered under the Dolphin Estate Bridge.

“They have all been removed by the enforcement team of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.”

Like other parts of the country, housing shortage is a major issue for Nigeria’s commercial capital.
