Search and rescue efforts are currently underway near the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State after two individuals fell into the Lagos lagoon as a result of an accident involving a commercial vehicle.
The incident took place around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, reportedly due to a failure of the vehicle’s brakes.
Emergency management officials have reported that the marine police are spearheading the search and rescue mission to locate the two adults in the Lagoon.
Additionally, the remaining passengers have been transported to the General Hospital, Lagos Island.
A Director of Operations, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olatunde Akinsanya, who spoke to journalists after the incident, said, “Today (On Wednesday), at 10 minutes after 11am, we had a road accident very close to Adeniji Bypass.
“A commercial bus with 22 passengers suffered brakes failure on high speed. In the process, he ran himself into the barrier on the Third Mainland Bridge and two adults were plunged into the lagoon.
“We have recovered the wreckage of the vehicle and the victims have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“The next action is the search and rescue operations on the waterway and that is what we are collaborating with marine police, NEMA and others.”
The accident occurred on the day when Muslims celebrate Eid-El-Fitr, a work-free day. Upon witnessing the crash, other motorists stopped and gathered around the accident site to offer assistance to the victims.
Rescue personnel, security forces, and traffic control officers also swiftly responded to the scene.
It’s worth noting that the Federal Government had reopened the Third Mainland Bridge on April 4th after extensive repair works, with a speed limit set at 80 km/hr.
