The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned Nigerians against sharing other people’s nude pictures and private videos, saying anyone found engaging in the act will be arrested and prosecuted.

Disu also identified cyberbullying, cyberstalking and the deliberate spread of false information capable of causing panic or endangering lives as offences, urging Nigerians to be careful about the information they share online.

“We will arrest and prosecute anyone who shares people’s nude photos,” the IGP warned.

He advised Nigerians to verify information before sharing it on social media, stressing that people should not forward messages simply because they received them from someone else.

“Cyberbullying and cyberstalking are crimes. Knowingly spreading false information that can cause panic or endanger lives is also an offence. Verify before forwarding. Don’t just forward something because somebody sent it to you,” he said.

The police chief also warned against sharing another person’s nude pictures, private photos or videos, whether out of revenge or for entertainment.

He stressed that cases involving children were even more serious, warning Nigerians against circulating intimate images or videos involving minors.

“Sharing another person’s nude pictures or private photos and videos, even as revenge or just for fun, is an offence. Where a child is involved, the offence is even greater,” Disu said.

The IGP further cautioned Nigerians against lending their bank accounts or SIM cards to other people, noting that doing so could amount to an offence.

“Lending someone your bank account or SIM card is an offence,” he warned.

His remarks highlight the need for Nigerians to act responsibly both online and offline, particularly as social media and digital communication platforms continue to play a major role in everyday life.

Disu’s warning serves as a reminder that forwarding harmful content, spreading false information and allowing others to use personal financial or communication details can have serious consequences.

He urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it, respect other people’s privacy and avoid using digital platforms to harass, threaten or expose others.
