[VIDEO]Lagos Govt crushes 2,228 impounded motorcycles
The Lagos State government has insisted there is no turning back on its decision to ban commercial motorcycles, commonly known as okada, in six local government areas and nine local council development areas.
In an effort to achieve its objective, the government has already crushed 2,228 commercial motorcycles.
These motorcycles impounded by the Lagos State Task Force are being crushed in an undisclosed location within the state, according to Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the state governor’s chief press secretary.
Akosile, who shared a video of the impounded motorcycles being crushed on Twitter on Friday, believes that Lagos deserves better than okada.
He stated that the enforcement activity would continue until all commercial motorcycles were removed from the affected local government areas and local council development areas.
Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa are among the affected local government areas.
Concerns about the security and safety of the residents prompted the government to announce a total ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles in the affected areas beginning on June 1.
It emphasised the importance of compliance and assured residents that they would not be left to their own devices.
The government had pledged to work towards achieving an intermodal transportation system that would be the “pride of all.”
It announced the rolled out of alternatives, including many small buses, taxi cabs under the LAGRIDE scheme, and the deployment of more ferries on waterways, to cushion the likely effects of the ban in the affected areas.
