Following a viral video circulating on social media, showing Oba AbdulSemiyu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo in Ogun State, assaulting one of his subjects, the state government has announced a six-month suspension for the monarch.
The sanction, contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, categorically denounced the actions of the Oba as uncivil and not befitting of the status of a king.
The statement affirmed that the decision was reached after the Kabiyesi and his victim were invited by the commissioner for interrogation.
The invitation became imperative as a result of the reckless utterances and public misconduct of the Kabiyesi, as evident in the video that went viral on social media, which has brought the institution of Obaship into disrepute.
After initial investigations conducted on the matter, the Kabiyesi has been suspended and stripped of the paraphernalia of the stool of Orile-Ifo, pending the determination of his culpability or otherwise on the allegation.
“The foregoing decision was reached by the ministry, in conjunction with the Egba Traditional Council, in accordance with Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021.
“The Ogun State Government will not condone any acts of indignity on any of its citizens by anybody, no matter how highly placed,” the commissioner stated.
