Water Resources bill suffers another setback as Niger delta group rejects it

The proposed National Water Resources Bill was opposed by the Niger Delta Youth Council, a sociopolitical organization in the South-South geopolitical zone. They called it “a well-calculated strategy to further enslave Niger Deltans, notably the Ijaws.”

Therefore, the group has urged the Niger Delta’s residents to “wake up and reject the proposed bill.” The group is led by Comrade Mamamu Youkore.

This was said in a joint statement signed by the group’s President and Secretary, Comrade Youkore, and Comrade Shadrach Ebikeme, which was made accessible to journalists in Warri on Monday.

It noted with concern that, “If the controversial Bill is not rejected, and should it be passed into law, it could be dangerous to the already suffocating Niger Deltans and Ijaws in the Nigerian state.”

“The Bill will tear our fragile unity. They have taken the crude oil, water and the lives of the people. It is obnoxious and wicked to the Niger Delta and the Ijaw nation. The Bill raised lots of suspicion. To us in Niger Delta, particularly the Ijaws, water is life. The Nigerian state have taken too much from us already, we will resist this move”, the group further stated.
The organization believed that adding the proposed National Water Resources Bill to the litany of laws that already work to impede the advancement of the Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta would be too much to bear, so it had to be resisted by whatever means necessary.

The group said that the Bill was superfluous at this stage in Nigeria’s history and urged the National Assembly to only support bills that would foster national harmony rather than discord.

It was stated again that the National Water Resources Bill “includes lots of ambiguity, confusion, and treasonable activities” notwithstanding the Federal Government’s increasing desire for the Bill’s passage and the numerous pieces of misinformation distributed to National Assembly members.
