President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the Nigeria Police Force and improving the welfare of its personnel as part of ongoing efforts to ensure effective protection and service for Nigerians.
During the passing-out parade and commissioning of Regular Officers Course 6 at the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, on Saturday, the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, outlined key initiatives to strengthen the police. These include the acquisition of new vehicles, communication equipment, and forensic tools to boost crime detection and prevention capabilities.
This was disclosed in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President).
Tinubu emphasised that the development of a nation is tied to the strength of its institutions, and his administration is focused on equipping the police with modern tools and training to better serve the public. “We are working to ensure our police force is equipped to protect and serve our citizens effectively,” he said. “We have initiated key measures such as acquiring new vehicles, communication gear, and forensic equipment to enhance their crime-fighting abilities.”
The President also stressed the importance of improving the welfare of police officers, noting that a motivated workforce is crucial to maintaining national security. “Our administration is dedicated to improving the quality of life for police personnel and their families. A well-cared-for police officer is essential for ensuring the safety of our citizens,” Tinubu added.
Acknowledging the need for modern policing, he urged the force to leverage technology and data analytics to combat crime effectively in the digital age. He also underscored the value of community policing, stating that it should be the backbone of law enforcement. “Your success will largely depend on your relationship with the communities you serve. Be visible, approachable, and responsive to their needs,” Tinubu advised.
To address the issue of understaffing, the President announced a nationwide recruitment drive to inject new energy into the police force, alleviate overwork, and provide opportunities for young Nigerians to serve their country. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to building a well-resourced police force, essential for national security.
Tinubu praised Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Police Academy for their dedication to developing the newly commissioned officers. He reminded the graduating cadets that the badge they now wear symbolizes the trust Nigerians have placed in them and urged them to uphold integrity, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
“Your role goes beyond enforcing laws; it is about serving with compassion, fairness, and respect for human rights. Uphold the highest standards of integrity in every situation you face,” he encouraged them, adding that the challenges they will encounter in their careers will test their character and resolve.
Earlier, AIG Sadiq I. Abubakar, Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy, highlighted the academy’s commitment to producing superior officers equipped to tackle the complexities of policing in Nigeria. He presented 478 cadets who had completed both academic and professional police training to President Tinubu and urged the graduates to embody justice, professionalism, and national security.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Housing and Urban Development Minister Arch. Ahmed Dangiwa, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and other key government officials and police representatives.
