WhatsApp unveils payment feature within app in Singapore

Following the launch in India and Brazil, it has been said that WhatsApp would soon introduce in-chat payments in Singapore.

According to reports, the IT firm collaborated with Stripe, a provider of online payments, to introduce the service in the area.

According to Tech Crunch, WhatsApp developed this payment feature utilising the Stripe Connect and Stripe Checkout services, enabling in-app purchases both online and off.

Businesses will now accept payments from customers via credit cards, debit cards, or Singapore’s PayNow fund transfer service.

The feature is currently only available to a small number of companies, according to Meta, but it will soon be made available to more retailers.

Businesses can set up this service through WhatsApp Business, which will also provide instructions on how to open a Stripe account.

The regional head and managing director for Southeast Asia at Stripe, Sarita Singh, said in a statement to Tech Crunch said, “Most people I know in Singapore use WhatsApp to chat with each other. Now, they can pay local businesses using the app as well. The speed and convenience of payments through WhatsApp will help businesses expand their revenue streams with new channels and access a wider customer base.”

In test mode, WhatsApp payments were first introduced in India in 2020 via the nation’s Unified Payment Interface network. After permitting peer-to-peer payments for approximately three years, it also started accepting merchant payments in Brazil last month.
