The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged that those arrested for allegedly stealing sewage manhole covers in Abuja will face the full force of the law to deter others.

Wike also assured that buyers and users of stolen manhole covers, as well as other vandalised public infrastructure, would be prosecuted for economic sabotage and endangering lives.

In a statement on Monday, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, revealed that over 50 suspects had been arrested for manhole theft in the FCT, and 25 stolen covers recovered. This reflects the FCTA’s zero tolerance for vandalism.

Commending the security agencies for their swift action, Wike described their efforts as “fantastic” and reassured residents of their safety. He also praised Nigerians for condemning vandalism and emphasised that safeguarding public amenities is a shared responsibility.

Wike urged FCT residents to use social media constructively to report such crimes and promised swift government action. He called on Nigerians to expose vandals within their communities before they act.
