Vandals who damaged and stole transmission cables, plunging the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) into darkness, will face severe punishment, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has declared.
Speaking during a media chat on Sunday, Wike expressed outrage over the incident, confirming that suspects have been arrested and will be charged with economic sabotage rather than theft.
“These criminals have left over 60% of Abuja in darkness. This is sabotage! By God’s grace, the security agencies are on top of it. Those arrested will not escape justice, and others will learn from their fate,” Wike said.
He emphasised that such acts threaten the stability of the nation’s capital, vowing that perpetrators would face severe consequences.
The minister called on FCT residents to assist in policing the area by reporting suspicious activities, noting that protecting the capital is a collective responsibility.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed the blackout to vandalism of its 132kV transmission line and underground cables, affecting areas such as Wuse, Utako, Jabi, Maitama, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.
“Enough is enough,” Wike added. “No one who loves their country should tolerate such actions.”
