A 39-year-old woman, Chizoma Akali, on Wednesday appeared in a Lugbe Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly assaulting her neighbour and resisting arrest.
The police charged Akali, who lives in Lugbe zone 6, Airport Road Abuja with criminal force, assault, intimidation and resisting arrest.
The prosecutor, Mr Essain Joseph told the court that the complainant, John Chinemere of Lugbe zone 6, Airport Road reported the incident at the Trademore Police Station on Dec. 28, 2020.
Joseph said that the defendant assaulted Chinemere during an altercation.
He also alleged that the defendant emptied the contents of the refuse bin inside the complainant’s house for no cause.
He told the court that when police invited the defendant for questioning, she failed to honour the invitation but she later reported to the station and was also granted bail.
The offence contravened the provisions of sections 265, 264, 397 and 172 of the Penal Code.
Akali denied admitted committing the offence.
Mrs Vic Cliff Obiayo, Counsel to Akali, made an oral application for the bail of the accused, citing Sections 35 (4) and 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution.
Akali also cited sections 158, 162 and 165 (2) of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act.
She told the court that the defendant is a public servant and assured the court that the defendant would not jump bail.
The judge, Mr Mohammed Suraj, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500, 000, with a reliable surety in like sum.
Suraj ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and his address must be verified by the court registrar.
Suraj ordered that the surety must present a photocopy of her office identity card to the court’s registrar.
He said if the defendant failed to comply with the bail condition she would be remanded in correctional centre until the adjourned date
The judge adjourned the case until March 16 for hearing.
