The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reaffirmed on Wednesday that it will not be swayed by blackmail in the ongoing prosecution of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
In a statement by EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, the agency called on Bello to comply with the court’s orders and appear before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Oyewale criticized the former governor for making “several unsuccessful attempts to disrupt his trial through reckless and irresponsible actions.”
“As a responsible anti-corruption agency, the EFCC takes public opinion seriously, especially when it aligns with our operational standards,” Oyewale stated. “However, no amount of hysteria, blackmail, or media attacks will cause the Commission to compromise its integrity.”
He emphasized that Bello’s case is just one of many, and its outcome will not define the success or failure of the EFCC, adding, “Corruption fights back, and we are aware of that. Nevertheless, Bello must face his day in court, no matter the blackmail or appeals to public sympathy.”
The EFCC spokesman further noted that Bello has yet to enter a plea on the N80.2 billion money laundering charges brought against him. He also recounted an incident where Bello arrived at the EFCC headquarters with a large security detail and a media entourage, attempting to surrender but was tactically rebuffed by the agency due to intelligence on his actions.
“The incident of Wednesday, September 18, 2024, regarding the orchestrated antics of the former governor raised concerns among Nigerians, who have been eagerly awaiting his arrest and trial,” the statement concluded.
